WooCommerce Subscriptions lets you sell products and services with recurring payments. SMS for WooCommerce is fully compatible with WooCommerce Subscriptions, and you can trigger an SMS for each of the available renewal, switch, cancellation, expiry and suspension notifications.
Requirements
Requires WooCommerce Subscriptions and SMS for WooCommerce to both be installed and active on your site.
Setup Instructions
- Activate WooCommerce Subscriptions.
- Go to WooCommerce → SMS Settings → SMS Notifications → Subscription SMS.
- Enable subscription-related notifications for events like renewal, cancellation, or expiration.
- Customize messages for each subscription event.
- Save your changes.
Subscription notifications
- Admin New Renewal – Sends an admin notification when your store receives a new renewal order. You can enter a comma-separated list of recipients and customize the message.
- Admin Subscription Switched – Sends an admin notification when your store receives a new subscription-switch order. You can enter a comma-separated list of recipients and customize the message.
- Customer Processing Renewal – Sends a customer notification when the renewal order is in processing. You can customize the message.
- Customer Completed Renewal – Sends a customer notification when the renewal order is complete. You can customize the message.
- Customer On-hold Renewal – Sends a customer notification when the renewal subscription is on-hold. You can customize the message.
- Customer Subscription Switch – Sends a customer notification when the subscription is switched by the customer. You can customize the message.
- Admin Cancelled Subscription – Sends an admin notification when the subscription is cancelled. You can enter a comma-separated list of recipients and customize the message.
- Admin Expired Subscription – Sends an admin notification when the subscription is expired. You can enter a comma-separated list of recipients and customize the message.
- Admin Suspended Subscription – Sends an admin notification when the subscription is suspended (on-hold). You can enter a comma-separated list of recipients and customize the message.
Available placeholders for Subscription SMS
Subscription SMS messages don’t have their own dedicated merge tags — they reuse the same base order placeholders available to every order-status SMS in the plugin, applied to the renewal or switch order behind the event.
- {order_id} – the renewal/switch order number
- {order_amount} – the total amount of the renewal/switch order
- {order_status} – the current status of the renewal/switch order
- {billing_name} / {billing_first} / {billing_last} – the customer’s name
- {shipping_method} – the shipping method on the order, if any
- {shop_name} – your store name
- {shop_url} – your store URL
- {email} – the customer’s billing email
- {payment_url} – link for the customer to complete payment on that order (useful in a failed/on-hold renewal message)
Troubleshooting
- Admin renewal/switch SMS never arrives – confirm the Admin Phone Number is saved under WooCommerce → SMS Settings → Settings; admin subscription events send to that number (or the comma-separated list you enter on the event itself).
- Customer SMS never arrives – check the customer’s billing phone is saved on the subscription’s parent order, and that they’ve opted in if ‘Enable SMS Opt-in on Checkout’ is turned on under Checkout Options.
- Same event seems to fire from two different toggles – ‘Admin Suspended Subscription’ and ‘Customer On-hold Renewal’ both key off the subscription being placed on-hold; enable only the one you want if you’d rather not send both.
